Getting to Know Landfills

The very first waste treatment introduced to humanity involved a landfill, where all the waste collected from households and commercial and industrial businesses are dumped. Although there are already new methods of waste management in the current times, landfill waste disposal is still being used by many countries around the world.

There are actually three types of landfill that can be created, depending on the type of land that is available. The industrial holes left by mining companies can be used as a pit, where the waste is filled to cover the holes. Canyons and valleys can also become a potential landfill. In this case, the valleys are filled with waste until it levels up with the plain ground. The most common land used as landfill is the plain ground where the waste collected is piled up way above the ground.

Landfills must be strategically located at a place where large vehicles can easily access the dumping site. Even if the landfill should be set up away from civilisations and urban communities, a good road network must be present so that waste collection vehicles will not have a hard time going to and fro the landfill. Furthermore, landfills must be located near large bodies of water so that monitoring wells can be easily put up.

A landfill cannot be built right away because a piece of land must pass particular requirements so that it can be constructed into a landfill. Aside from the different government-initiated criteria imposed on the constructions of landfills, take note of the aforementioned general conditions that must be strictly followed by all urban developers and landfill constructors.
